The MAX385ESE+ Analog Multiplexer/Demultiplexer Switch is one such device, providing exceptionally low power consumption, fast switching times, single-ended or differential configurations, and high-voltage operation. Application Field of MAX385ESE+: The MAX385ESE+ is suitable for applications in a variety of fields, including but not limited to, power management, motor control, sensing, automatic metering, gaming, consumer electronics, medical equipment, home automation, industrial control, automotive and portable devices. Working Principle of MAX385ESE+: The functioning of the MAX385ESE+ analog multiplexer/demultiplexer switch is based upon the well-known logic-level controlled passgate transistor array. A CMOS passgate switch utilizes a field effect transistor (FET) to selectively connect input signal lines to the output terminals. A logic signal is used to control when and if the passgate is open. When the logic signal is logically high (1), the passgate is open and the signal is allowed to pass through to the output. When the logic signal is lower (0), the passgate closes and the signal is blocked from the output. This is the basic action of the passgate transistor array of the MAX385ESE+.

The MAX385ESE+ is available in single-ended and differential configurations with 2, 3, or 4-channel multiplexers, and 2, 4 or 8-channel demultiplexers. All 2-channel devices are dual-directional, meaning they can also be used as a demultiplexer, while all 3 and 4-channel multiplexers are unidirectional, meaning they can only be used as a multiplexer. The MAX385ESE+ package includes three dedicated control pins: Power-On Reset (POR), Clock Enable (CE), and Data Enable (DE).

The Power-On Reset (POR) pin is a logic input that provides a complete power-on reset of the device when activated. The Clock Enable (CE) pin is used to enable the clock signal to the internal shift registers, allowing the device to be controlled by an external clock signal. The Data Enable (DE) pin is used to control the operation of the input/output logic. This is a logic input, which when asserted, allows the databus to read data from the internal shift registers and write data to the internal shift registers. This provides the user with full control over the input/output logic.

The MAX385ESE+ package is designed for operation from -40°C to +85°C and is available in various operating voltages from 1.8V to 5.5V. The switching timing is typically 40ns and the on resistance ranges from 0.4Ω to 2.5Ω. It is designed for operation with a maximum supply current of 500µA and an average standby (leakage) current of 2µA. The device requires an external capacitor and a pull-up resistor, depending on the application.
