The MAX8845XETC+T is an integrated battery charger and power supply designed for space-constrained,form factors of 3.8VandW-CDMAhandsets. It is a single-package, multi-function solution that enables designers to meet the system power and battery charging needs in applications that use singlecell Li-ion (Li+) batteries. The MAX8845XETC+T integrates everything required for a complete power supply solution--including charge control, battery-input voltage protection, low-battery detection and an uninterruptible power supply.
The MAX8845XETC+T is a highly flexible, compact solution that allows designers to take advantage of the latest battery technology while allowing the development of a cost-effective battery management system. The on-chip charging circuitry supports the full gamut of battery chemistries, including single-cell Li-ion chemistries, as well as NiMH and NiCd chemistries. Its ability to handle most battery technologies, including Lithium Polymer, simplifies designs of portable subsystems with limited board space.
Additionally, the on-chip uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is designed to mains power loss. The UPS contains a power FET that connects the battery to the system bus in case of a power loss or when the battery voltage drops below a predefined threshold. It ensures that the battery voltage remains within +/- 2V of the system voltage and prevents damage to the battery or electronic components.
The MAX8845XETC+T also includes an on-chip low-battery detection circuit, which monitors the battery voltage and provides an indication when the battery voltage drops too low. The circuit can be programmed to provide a signal before disconnecting the battery or resetting the microprocessor. This reduces the need to add extra components to the system, thus saving cost and board space.
The MAX8845XETC+T incorporates advanced features to protect the battery from overcharging and undercharging, which can lead to battery damage and reduced battery life. A timer-based charge control circuit prevents overcharging by terminating the charge cycle once the battery is fully charged. An adjustable-temperature charge termination circuit prevents overcharging of the battery, even in the event of a battery temperature increase due to excessive current draw or other environmental conditions. The MAX8845XETC+T also provides the capability to reduce the charger current if the battery voltage rises or falls below a programmed threshold.
The MAX8845XETC+T is well-suited for battery- powered applications that require an efficient, fully integrated charging and power supply solution.
