Working Principle

The MCP73833T-CNI/UN series is an analog programmable Li-Ion/Li-Polymer battery charger controllers. Working in autonomy and no external components required, these chargers are suitable for low-current charging applications, such as wearable devices, as well as for higher-current charging in larger, single-cell devices, such as smartphones and tablets.

The charge current is programmable and offered with a fixed current set point or adjustable from 100 to 500mA, with output voltages options of 4.2, 4.35, 4.4 and 4.5V.

At startup, the charger is in standby mode, where the voltage at the input is regulated and supply to the battery is cut off. When the battery voltage is below the working threshold of 4.2V, the MCP73833T-CNI/UN series enables the control logic and starts up the charging process.

The charge current is automatically adjusted at a constant level until the battery reaches the float voltage or current limit. Then the charge current is reduced to the termination current level, i.e. 20% of the programmed current setting, thereby completing the charging process.

The MCP73833T-CNI/UN also offers a thermal protection alert signal, to prevent case temperature going out of boundary. At the end of each charging cycle and during the standby period, the input voltage is monitored, if it drops for an extended period of time, the charger will switch into sleep mode to conserve power.
