MCP73861-I/SLG is a micro-power system battery charge management controller that allows for simultaneous charging of lithium-ion (Li-Ion) batteries and provides status information regarding the charging process. It is a multi-chip Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC) device with deep discharge protection. It is designed in combination with a low-cost power switch and a low-dropout (LDO) voltage regulator to reduce power consumption while charging a battery. It is a low-cost, flexible PMIC solution for portable device applications with limited board space.

The MCP73861-I/SLG is a fully-integrated single-cell Li-Ion/Li-Polymer battery charging and management controller that can be used in various applications. It supports a wide range of charging currents from 0.2mA to 2A without the need of switching devices, or it supports up to 4A when additional switches are used. The device has over-voltage, over-charge, and over-discharge protection features, and a Thermal Regulation Mode (TRM) as well as a Current Limiting feature for charge cycle termination.

The device also has a low quiescent current. The current drain is lower than 1mA even when the integrated LDO is enabled.

MCP73861-I/SLG works by constantly monitoring the battery\'s charge levels and state of charge (SoC). When the SoC reaches 0%, the charge cycle begins and the device enables the external components (i.e. a low-cost power switch and a low-dropout (LDO) voltage regulator). During the charge cycle, the device constantly monitors the battery\'s voltage and current. If an over-voltage limit is reached, the device will automatically terminate the charge cycle. The device will also offset the current limit and terminate the charge cycle if the device temperature reaches a certain limit.

The MCP73861-I/SLG can provide an accurate state-of-charge information out when connected with an external thermistor. It can be used in a variety of different applications such as industrial and automotive battery packs, solar applications, portable power supplies, and wireless base stations. Dedicated thermal regulation circuitry and high stability switching frequency protect the battery against overcharging and prevent damage to cells.
