MCP73871T-1CCI/ML Application Field and Working Principle
The MCP73871T-1CCI/ML is a highly efficient, low power, and long life 1-Cell Li-Ion & Li-Polymer Battery Charge Management Controller IC designed for space constrained mobile applications. Working Principle
The MCP73871T-1CCI/ML has an internal key-cycle timer, presetting the charge rate to match the charger input. It has two automatic charging parameters, the Fast-Charge and the Pre-charge parameters. The Fast-Charge Parameters allow the charge current to be set according to the battery thermal and size constraints. This is done to ensure adequate battery charging and protection.
The Pre-Charge Parameters allow the charger to reduce the current limit to a pre-charge current limit for a certain period of time before the charger moves to the fast-charge mode. This ensures that the longer cells are completely charged and prevents overcharging.
The charge current is set to match the input source capabilities as well as the battery size and capacity. The Charge Voltage Limit is set to match the battery voltage, adjustable via external resistor in order to prevent overcharging.
The temperature monitoring is done with an external thermistor connected to an external temperature pin. It is used to monitor the battery temperature and limit the charge current to prevent over-temperature charging.
The MCP73871T-1CCI/ML also has an extensive self-protection features like Short Circuit Detection and Over-Voltage Detection to protect the battery from conditions outside of the device’s operating parameters.
