The popularity of rechargeable lithium ion batteries is ever-growing and batteries with these types of cells are found in a wide range of electronics. When it comes to battery chargers, there are usually two main types to choose from: wall-mounted or external battery chargers, and power management integrated circuits (PMICs). PMIC-based battery chargers offer the convenience of a self-contained battery charging solution, while still providing flexibility by having the ability to be customized to fit a specific application’s needs. MIC79050-4.2YMM is an example of a DC/DC buck-boost IC designed to function as a PMIC battery charger and it is aimed to meet the needs of portable and wearables applications.
The MIC79050-4.2YMM is housed in an 18-lead MSOP package and operates from a 2.6V to 5.5V input voltage range. The input voltage can vary from battery to adapter supply and the device automatically switches from one mode to the other. It is capable of charging two-cell lithium-ion (Li-Ion) or three-cell lithium-polymer (Li-Poly) batteries with outputs up to 4.2V (4.38V with hysteresis). It is also possible to separately choose the voltage hysteresis of the two cells and configure them to offer optimal charge operation. This is done by a programmable hysteresis circuit that is enabled by the PGOOD pin. The dual-cell pin that allows setting the voltage in each cell separately also allows setting a different charging current in each cell, according to the battery application.
In addition to its charging capabilities, the device also offers over-voltage protection on each output, programmable current limit, constant-current/constant-voltage charge algorithm, and automated input current limiting. This feature allows the device to limit the input current in order to protect the source from over-current. The charge algorithm also includes thermal regulation, allowing for varying levels of current as the part’s temperature increases. Finally, the device has a very low standby power of only 7.1mW.
In order to make use of the device’s features, all one needs to do is connect the battery and an external power source (usually an adapter). Once connected, the device will automatically detect the type of power source and configure itself accordingly. It will then begin the charging algorithm and will output up to the desired charging current at up to 4.2V. The device also supports managing the battery temperature, which is done by monitoring the battery temperature and adjusting the current accordingly.
The MIC79050-4.2YMM is a great PMIC battery charger for portable and wearables applications, as it provides a simple, yet powerful solution for charging Li-Ion or Li-Poly batteries.
