The MIC79050-4.2YS-TR is a highly integrated battery charging integrated circuit that combines a buck switching regulator, a linear regulator, power MOSFETs, an analog temperature sensor and a Coulomb Counter for monitoring the battery current. It is primarily designed for charging Lithium-Ion/Polymer battery-powered consumer products such as cellular phones, portable CD/MP3 players, PDAs and other portable battery-operated electronic equipment.
The MIC79050-4.2YS-TR features an input voltage range from 0.45 V to 6.0 V, up to 95% power efficiency, and up to 95 mA of output current. The buck section is capable of providing a regulated output voltage of 4.2 V with a minimum dropout voltage of 0.05 V. The linear section is capable of providing an adjustable output voltage range from 0.45 V to 5.0 V, enabling the use of low voltage batteries. The battery temperature monitoring, current monitoring and control functions help to maximize the battery life.
The MIC79050-4.2YS-TR operates in a two-stage charging mode, allowing for efficient charging of the batteries. In the first stage (Fast Charge), the buck converter is used to provide the bulk of the charging current and the linear regulator is used to provide the trim current. The buck converter works in a step-down mode, taking the input voltage and converting it to a regulated output voltage. The output current is adjusted by varying the duty cycle of the internal power MOSFET.
The second stage (Top-Off Charging) is used to fully charge the battery by trimming the output current and maintaining the output voltage at 4.2 V until the battery voltage reaches the preset charge voltage. The linear regulator is used to provide the trim current and maintain the output voltage at 4.2 V. The battery temperature monitoring and control functions help to reduce the risk of overcharging by automatically disabling the charging circuit when the ambient battery temperature is out of the specified range.
