Magnetorheological (MR) fluids are formulated with micron-sized magnetic particles suspended in a base fluid such as oil, glycerin, and water. Special additives and a surfactant can be added to modify the viscosity and other physical properties and to create a thickener.
MR fluids are also known as Magnetorheological Elastomers (MRE) which can function as a damper due to their variable stiffness characteristics and are often used in vibration damping and noise reduction applications. MR fluids offer high damping performance, good wear resistance, variable damping, low gas generation, a wide operating temperature range and the ability to respond within milliseconds.
The properties of MR fluids are based on the principle of magneto-rheology (MT2) which is a physical and mechanical phenomenon observed by Wheatstone of London in 1838. The principle states that when an external magnetic field is applied to the MR fluid, its micro particles are magnetically polarized and form chains of particles which produce a yield stress and greatly increase the viscosity of the fluid. The magnetic field changes the attractive and repulsive forces between the particles and increases or reduces the yield stress according to its intensity.
The MR fluid\'s performance depends on its formulation and the intensity and frequency of the applied magnetic field. Domestic and industrial applications of MR fluids include active damping systems, engine vibration dampers, robotic arm actuators and other positioning and control functions. When used for active damping, a voltage is applied to an electromagnet which induces a magnetic field.
The intensity and frequency of the magnetic field can be varied or adjusted to control the yield stress. Depending on the physical design of the system and the viscosity of the MR fluid, the actuator response time can be significantly reduced. This has led to largely improved performance for aircraft and automotive applications in which fast response and precise control are critical.
In vibro-acoustic applications, MR fluids can be used to reduce noise and vibration by altering the acoustic properties of materials or structures. The MR fluid can be integrated into dampers whose response time and damping force can be controlled by varying the intensity and frequency of the induced magnetic field. Due to the MRI\'s unique properties, it is often used in loudspeaker enclosures to reduce acoustic resonance and reverberation.
MR fluids are also used in robotics for precise motion control, actuation and positioning. This is because the MRI can provide variable resistance and damping characteristics so that the motion of objects in a robotic system can be finely controlled. By applying a voltage to an electromagnet, the magnetic field intensity and frequency can be adjusted to provide precise motion control in robotic arms, hands and other positioning systems.
In industrial applications, MR fluids are used in machines and equipment with high levels of vibration to reduce tooth chatter, decrease risk of wear and tear and increase service life. MR fluids can also be used to stabilize loads, damp shock and vibration, and improve the precision and accuracy of operation.
In short, MR fluids are used in many fields of engineering and technology as their properties can be easily and precisely controlled and adjusted to suit the requirements of any particular application. MR fluids can be tailored to act as a damper and reducing noise, shock and vibration as desired.
