Power factor correction (PFC) is a technology used in power electronics architectures to optimize overall system efficiency. The PFS706EG is a high efficiency, low footprint PFC controller from Pericom Semiconductor Corporation. It is an adaptive on-time pulse width modulation (PWM) controller with integrated resistor-programmable oscillator for improving the power factor and harmonic distortion of AC/DC or DC/DC converters. The controller has built-in soft-start/stop, active burr brown peak current mode control, programmable frequency, and has a full range of protection including over temperature protection and short circuit protection.
The PFS706EG’s adaptive on-time control extends the power factor range from 0.90 to 0.99 by continuously adjusting the PWM output frequency, as well as its output pulse width. This enables it to achieve higher efficiency and power factor, resulting in reduced current distortion, allowing for smoother power delivery, and improved system reliability.
Some key design features of the PFS706EG include adjustable slope compensation, adjustable line-frequency reset and compensation settings, adjustable dead time, detectable under-voltage lockouts, integrated EMI filter, and thermal shutdown.The adjustabledeadtime setting is effective when the load conditions suddenly change and can ensure that the current mode control loop is stable by avoiding large output voltage spikes. The adjustable slope compensation aids in system response time and retains excellent AC load regulation, even at high AC input power factors.

The PFS706EG also features adjustable pulse-by-pulse current limit, frequency foldback, and selectable switch soft-start. The adjustable current limit maximizes the converter efficiency during low to medium loads without degrading system response time, while the frequency foldback feature helps improve efficiency and reduce component loss during low-load applications.
