Power Factor Correction (PFC) is an important technology of power supply that is widely used to improve the power quality of power supply and reduce power losses. It mainly applies to the rectification and DC-DC conversion stage of electronic products. The PFC7324L is an integrated PFC power management integrated circuit (PMIC) designed to improve power factor, reduce power supply losses, reduce the total harmonic distortion (THD), and save energy.The PFC7324L provides two active-mode stages: a pre-regulator to perform power factor correction and a synchronous buck converter to generate a regulated output. It has a wide input voltage range from 4V ~ 90V and is compatible with voltage regulators from 8V ~ 90V. It is ideal for high power LED applications, industrial grade motor drives, and application-level power system solutions where high efficiency and power factor is desired.The PFC7324L features an over-temperature protection (OTP) circuit, an accurate current sense amplifier for high efficiency, an enable control function for on/off power transition control, high current integration capacity and high reliability. The chip also integrates a low-dropout linear regulator (LDO) to provide a reliable power supply voltage (VCC) to the internal controllers.The architecture of the PFC7324L consists of two major stages, the active power factor correction (PFC) stage and the synchronous buck converter stage. The active PFC stage is used to rectify the AC input voltage into a DC voltage and regulates it at the set point of typically 380V. The voltage level is determined by the VCC input of the power factor correction pre-regulator. The internal switching power converter is then used to boost the DC voltage to the desired value and generate a regulated output. This synchronous buck stage utilizes an integrated power MOSFET (MOSFET) to perform the DC/DC conversion from the PFC stage output voltage level into the required voltage level.The working principle of the PFC7324L is based on a parabolic law of input current. The system can perform active PFC by monitoring the current at the input side of the system. If the input current does not follow the parabolic law, the PFC system will respond accordingly to make the voltage correction. The output voltage of the system is then regulated through the synchronous buck conversion stage. This ensures that the power supply is stable and efficient.In summary, the PFC7324L is an integrated PMIC designed to improve power factor, reduce power losses, reduce THD, and save energy.
