The RS1DTR is a diode rectifier single with a range of applications and working principles. This diode is used in computer power supplies and other switched power supplies where a low ripple, low on resistance, and low forward voltage drop are required. Additionally, this diode is used in popular bridge rectifier applications, due to its robust nature and low thermal resistance.
At its most basic, the RS1DTR acts as a switch that allows current to flow through it one way and disregards current travelling in the other direction. This action is known as rectification, and is how the device is able to act as a bridge rectifier. This is achieved by the movement of electrons that may be pushed or pulled depending on the direction of current travelling through the diode. When a current passes from the ‘anode’ to the ‘cathode’, the diode is forward biased and electrons move towards the anode from the cathode allowing current to pass. If a current is travelling from the cathode to anode, the diode is reverse biased and the electrons will not travel any further, blocking the current and preventing it from flowing.

When the DC voltage increases, the diode will absorb the excess current and release it as heat, thus reducing the output voltage. As a result, the output voltage is accurately maintained.

This type of application performs the same action as above, but the constant voltage is the result of the diode delaying the charging of the capacitor.
