Introduction

TL2845D is a P-channel, low-side MOSFET drive register designed for DC/DC one-to-two power rail or two-to-one power rail applications. When compared with other conventional smart drivers, the TL2845D offers low standby current consumption, low MOSFET drive turn-on loss, and analog voltage modulation capability. This unique feature simplifies the external component layout and reduces the design complexity. It requires only three external component connections and it is available in the 3 mm x 3 mm VQFN-14 package.

Applications

TL2845D is applicable for a wide range of consumer, industrial and automotive applications where Ultra-Low Standby Power consumption and good power efficiency are required, such as headless PCs, portable consumer and industrial applications, radio and audio applications, gaming or general purpose TV or notebook power supplies, and mobile communication devices.The TL2845D is also ideal for powering LED lighting, LCD panels, and other consumer electronic devices. It uses MOSFETs and diodes as the main power switch, and also provides short-circuit protection and overcurrent protection with external components.

Working Principle

TL2845D is a DC-DC switching controllers with a variety of internal analog voltage modulation capability, such as pulse frequency modulation (PFM), spread spectrum modulation (SPM), and analog voltage modulation (AVM). It sets the output regulation power supply to the level according to the input voltage.The TL2845D can work in one of two ways: first, it can be set up for continuous conduction mode operation used for high output power. Second, it can be set up for discontinuous conduction mode where it will reduce current consumption during low power load conditions. The TL2845D contains a boost P-channel MOSFET, a boot capacitor, an internal voltage reference, a voltage regulator and two low-side NMOSFETs. The boost P-channel MOSFET controls the output voltage by amplifier and regulates the current according to the input voltage. The boot capacitor will be increased when the voltage is dropped, and then the voltage regulator will supply the current to the boost P-channel MOSFET, and the ramp up current will decrease the input voltage, finally leading to stable output voltage.The two low-side NMOSFETs control the on and off of the power supply. The output voltage can be adjusted by changing the frequency of the switching cycles. Thus, if the frequency is changed, the output voltage can be regulated according to the change, which means that the TL2845D can be used to regulate the voltage even when the input voltage varies. The TL2845D also provides over-current protection and over-temperature protection using external components. For example, one of the components is a current-sensing resistor, which can be used to detect the over-current condition and then trigger the protection circuit.
