Power management integrated circuits (PMICs) are chipsets that integrate a range of analog and digital functions, typically power regulation and conversion, to manage the power flow in electronic systems. PMICs are often used in electronics such as smartphones, tablets, wearables, power supplies, and lighting. One type of PMIC is an AC/DC converter, which converts alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). The TOP258LG PMIC is a high-efficiency, AC/DC switching and linear regulator IC that helps to reduce power consumption and minimize board space in applications such as TV, LCD and LED displays, telecommunications, networking and server equipment, and home and industrial automation. This IC has an integrated constant current source (CCS) and is designed for PFC and standby power supply applications. The TOP258LG is available in a DIP-8, eSOP-8 and DPAK-7 packages, providing flexibility for a custom design to meet each application\'s requirements.
The TOP258LG IC\'s primary function is to separately regulate main power supplies, standby power supplies, and LED driver current. Through patented dynamic boundary mode operation, the device provides a high-power efficiency of 95% and eliminates the need for EMI filter components. Furthermore, its integrated soft-start and current limit functions ensure reliable system operation. And, because of its wide operating bandwidth, it is able to handle rapid load transients and support high-switching frequencies.
The TOP258LG PMIC\'s main application fields include desktop PCs, notebook PCs, game consoles, switching power supplies, entertainment products, CTV, DVB and Set-top-Box. For its working principle, the device operates by controlling a series of DC/DC converters which together form a dc-to-dc power supply chain. First, the primary power stage takes AC/DC input voltage and converts it to the desired output voltage. The secondary power stage then initiates a new conversion process at the secondary output voltage. An adjustable feedback loop allows the primary and secondary power stages to interact, ensuring that the output of the primary stage is regulated. Finally, a standby power supply is triggered by a logic signal to keep a specific voltage level in the device while the system is in standby or in deep sleep mode.
The TOP258LG PMIC also features integrated voltage regulation and a suite of system protection features. These features include over-current protection, over-temperature protection, and short-circuit protection. They work together to detect abnormal conditions and safely shut down the system in the event of faults. Overall, the design of the TOP258LG PMIC delivers a high-density, high-efficiency power solution for AC/DC and offline switching applications.
