Gate drivers are important components of modern power management systems. In safe, efficient and reliable power circuits, gate drivers are used to provide accurate control and high-speed switching of large power devices. In general, gate drivers activate and deactivate a power device by providing the appropriate gate control signal to the gate of the power device. UCC27221PWG4 is an integrated gate driver solution designed specifically to drive large N- channel MOSFETs in synchronous-rectified buck converter applications. This application brief will discuss the UCC27221PWG4 features, typical applications, and working principles.

The UCC27221PWG4 is optimized to drive very large MOSFET devices making buck converter designs more efficient and robust. The device has programmable internal soft-start, over-temperature protection and integrated MOSFET dead-time. It provides four gate driver outputs with low RDS(ON) voltage drop gate drive capability, with the ability to gate drive up to four 515mΩ MOSFETs simultaneously. The unique enable feature allows the user to safely disconnect the UCC27221PWG4 and turn off both low-side and high-side MOSFETs with a single input.

The UCC27221PWG4 is ideal in applications requiring high-current, high-power density, and precise control and synchronization. Typical applications include buck isolated DC/DC converter, isolated bidirectional DC/DC polarity converter, battery charging, DC input and output system control and power module design.

The UCC27221PWG4 employs a multi-function, single-package solution with a peak power traversal of up to 10 μF. The device includes an internal Soft-Start for ramping up the output during start-up, an over-temperature shutdown protection, and a fast active MOSFET dead-time protection circuit. The integrated dead-time protection is used to prevent cross conduction between the high and low side MOSFETs.

The UCC27221PWG4 is designed to provide a high efficiency, low-Voltage Drop, low distortion MOSFET drive to simplify system design and minimize cost. It has adjustable internal reference voltage and adjustable slew rate to optimize power stage performance, as well as flexible synchronization mode to enable external circuit synchronization. With adjustable pre-bias voltage, the current limitation can be achieved.

The UCC27221PWG4 is designed to provide a true turn-on gate protection, effectively eliminating high-energy dV/dt transients and EMI issues. Its active MOSFET dead-time is matched to the customer’s drain-source voltage and enabling the user to reduce leakage and optimize the dynamic response. Additionally, the UCC27221PWG4 has a built-in logic-level buffer to allow clean digital gate turn-on signals with positive current limiting.
