The UCC39421EVM003 evaluation module is designed to provide an example of how to use Texas Instruments’ UCC39421 universal off-line switcher for applications requiring isolated power conversion from a universal AC input. This module is redesigned for higher efficiency, with half-bridge-topology-based power stage. The switcher has a wide input voltage range from 90-280Vac that is available in any universal AC input.
The UCC39421EVM003 is designed for buck topology operation offering high performance, reliability and cost-effectiveness. It offers synchronous rectification for high efficiency, low EMI, and low switching loss. The UCC39421EVM003 includes an adjustable 400kHz-2kHz frequency range with voltage-mode or current-mode control. It uses the same control topology and current-mode for both buck and boost converters. It also includes built-in protection functions such as over-voltage, over-current, and over-temperature protection.
The UCC39421EVM003 is suitable for isolated DC/DC and AC/DC (off-line) SMPS applications. This module can be used in applications such as telecom/networking, power supplies, industrial, automotive, consumer electronics, and medical applications. The UCC39421EVM003 can be used to design an isolated dc/dc converter for an input voltage supply of up to either 90-280 Vac, or a two-step AC voltage supplied between 120-480 Vac.
The primary side of the circuitry of the UCC39421EVM003 comprises of a control IC UCC39421 (TI) which provides an adjustable output voltage. The PWM pulse is generated by UCC39421 IC and fed to the gate of MOSFETs. A pair of NFETs and PFETs are connected in half bridge topology and are driven by the PWM pulse from UCC39421. A transformer is connected between the Half bridge FETs, which provides an isolation of input from output voltage.
The secondary of the transformer is rectified and filtered for the output voltage. UCC39421EVM003 provides a user friendly output voltage trimming as well as current sensing. SMD components are used for the application; some components are used for providing thermal protection and soft start. A power stage comprising of NFETs and PFETs is integrated with the driver integrated circuit (UCC39421) in the UCC39421EVM003 evaluation module to form a complete converter.
The UCC39421EVM003 evaluation module provides the control circuitry to generate a regulated output voltage from a wide-range input source. It provides a minimum number of external components required for a demonstrating the UCC39421 IC performance in terms of reliability, cost, size and power conversion efficiency. The module efficient PWM control reduces EMI noise level ensuring further EMI certification for the applications. Furthermore, the UCC39421EVM003 evaluation module has been tested and proven to comply with the industry standards pertaining to electrical safety.
