Power management ICs (PMICs) are becoming increasingly important and have caught the attention of many industries. The Viper013HS is one of the latest PMICs and is specifically designed for high-efficiency, cost-effective and high-density, off-line applications. Thus, it can be categorized as an AC-DC converter, offline switcher.

The Viper013HS is based on Texas Instruments’ leading VIPerPlus mixed-signal technology, which provides superior protection schemes, high performance, and easy-to-use features. It offers 2 Watts of output power and up to 4 W/inch3 power density in a 3.2 mm x 3.2 mm package. The Viper013HS features a current mode PWM controller, two power MOSFETs, a Varistor and a dedicated audio/video/VIP (A/V VIP) coil.

The device can accept input voltage ranges from 475 mV to 600 VDC and features low standby power consumption and good efficiency over a wide operating temperature range. Its high frequency switcher can provide a constant frequency PWM for various applications like consumer, industrial, and telecom applications. It also has an internal start-up current limiter to protect against over-voltage, low-voltage, short-circuit, thermal, and cycle-by-cycle current-limit situations.

The VIPer013HS is also equipped with many protection features suchas over-voltage protection, under-voltage protection, and over-temperature protection. It also has a built-in soft-start feature that can reduce inrush currents. Additionally, the VIPer013HS is designed to minimize the need for EMI filtering and features a low-loss power supply disconnect switch.

The VIPer013HS’s working principle is based on an oscillator (or multi-frequencies) to drive a MOSFET switch. This switch produces current that drives the main switch which then acts as a voltage regulator. The AC input and DC output signals are processed by a U-ICP, switching at a constant frequency of 200 kHz and controlling the duration of the on and off cycles of the MOSFET switch, thereby reducing power consumption.
