The VIPER25LN AC/DC converter is a high-performance, low-noise, low-power linear regulator IC designed for demanding applications requiring wide voltage ranges, low noise, and an excellent power supply ripple performance. It operates in the 1.3V to 40V range and is compatible with a wide variety of voltage control options, including external resistors, thermistors, and adjustable voltage references. The VIPER25 is suitable for both offline switching and linear regulation in sensitive applications such as automotive electronics, medical equipment, and lighting, thanks to its fast-start, low-power, low noise, and wide input/output voltage range. It also features a low-power Standby mode for optimal power savings.

The VIPER25LN is a voltage-mode, boost converter-based linear regulator. The converter consists of two stages, the first being a pulse frequency modulated (PFM) topological switching converter and the second a linear regulation stage, both implemented with a single chip. The PFM stage generates a synthesized reference voltage from the input supply voltage, which is then fed to the linear regulation stage. This reference voltage is adjustable using an external reference voltage or a preset internal resistance. The linear regulation stage uses an N-channel MOSFET as a pass device to maintain a steady output voltage. In the event of an output overload, the VIPER25LN is over-current protected, shutting down the output and preventing damage to the IC.

An on-chip oscillator sets the switching frequency of the PFM switching stage. The VIPER25LN is designed to work with ceramic and Tantalum capacitors and has two operating modes: the Normal Mode and the Standby Mode. In the Normal Mode, the output is switched on or off as required and the output voltage is regulated. The Standby Mode is a low-power, low-ripple mode which reduces the output voltage to minimize power consumption and minimize electromagnetic interference.
