Working Principle
In its most basic form, the VIPER16HD operates as a buck converter. A buck converter is a type of DC to DC converter that takes a higher input voltage and reduces it to a lower output voltage. The converter does this by turning a switch, usually a MOSFET, on and off to create a pulse-width modulated (PWM) output. The PWM output is filtered to provide a lower DC voltage. This is the most efficient and accurate way to produce a DC voltage from an AC voltage source.
The VIPER16HD also features a high-level operation mode. This mode allows the converter to work in a boost, flyback, or bridge topology. In the boost topology, the VIPER16HD adjusts the pulse-width modulation to increase the output voltage after being boosted by an external inductor. The flyback topology is the most efficient for ac/dc applications, as it allows the inductor to store energy when the switch is turned off. In the bridge topology, the PWM circuit has four switches (two in series and two parallel) to create a bridge rectifier. The bridge rectifier is then used as a DC output.
