The VIPER20-E is a power management integrated circuit (PMIC) designed to provide control, protection, and regulation of offline switcher implementations used in ac-to-dc power conversion applications. Using a proprietary high-voltage Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) technology, the VIPER20-E enables a variety of buck and boost topologies, facilitating maximum flexibility for the designer. The VIPER20-E provides integrated functions for reset/start-up, under-voltage lockout (UVLO), over-temperature protection (OTP), and current-limit protection (CLP). The UVLO and reset/start-up features of the VIPER20-E support a broad range of operating conditions and are user-configurable via external pins.
The VIPER20-E is designed for applications requiring high efficiency and low standby power consumption, such as isolated AC/DC power supplies, switch-mode power supplies, motor control, and battery chargers. The VIPER20-E also enables applications that require high power density and dynamic response, such as AC/DC converters, offline switchers, and DC/DC converters. The VIPER20-E is available in a variety of packages, including SOIC, PowerSSO, and QCC packages, to provide maximum design flexibility. The VIPER20-E offers excellent performance and reliability, with proven module reliability and wide operating temperature ranges, making it ideal for a variety of industrial and consumer applications.
The VIPER20-E utilizes a single-stage buck converter and can be operated in continuous conduction mode (CCM) or discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). In CCM, the current in the inductor ramps linearly with time, which reduces the peak inductor current and results in higher efficiency. In DCM, the average current in the inductor is limited, resulting in a reduction in peak-to-peak inductor current. The VIPER20-E incorporates a fixed-frequency oscillator running at a frequency of up to 400kHz, allowing the designer to optimize the converter for the application’s required output voltage, efficiency, and power density.
The VIPER20-E also provides a wide range of protection features including soft start, UVLO, OTP, and over-current protection (OCP). The UVLO circuitry allows the user to set the input voltage threshold at which the converter will turn on and off. The OTP circuit monitors the die temperature and shuts down the converter when it exceeds the user-defined temperature threshold. The OCP circuit monitors the output current and protects the converter from excessive load conditions. The soft-start feature prevents inrush current and reduces output voltage overshoot on start-up.
The VIPER20-E has a wide operating temperature range of -40°C to +105°C and a high frequency range of 90kHz to 400kHz, making it ideal for solutions in industrial and consumer applications where high efficiency, low standby power, and fast transient response are desired. In addition, the external clock allows for synchronization across multiple devices. The VIPER20-E is available in a variety of versions with a variety of features, including a PFC version with integrated power factor correction, making it a good choice for designers who are looking for a simple and flexible solution to power management.
