The 25LC040/SN device is a four-kilobit memory that essentially serves as a separate entity within a larger electrical circuit. It has an array of 2048 x 8 bits and each bit can store a binary value of either 1 or 0. As a result, the memory device holds up to eight kilobytes of data. Depending on the type of integrated circuit (IC) package used, the 25LC040/SN memory chip can be manufactured into eight-pin plastic dual in-line packages or eight-pin plastic small outline packages.The 25LC040/SN is primarily designed as a non-volatile memory device to retain data images, text information and parameters. These data are accessible after the power is off and remain continuously accessible whenever power is resumed. The memory device is ideal for use in embedded systems that require non-volatile memory for storing and recovering data quickly. Applications include the programming of parameters into equipment like industrial controls, vending machines and fuel dispensers.Generally speaking, the 25LC040/SN works in the same way as other electronically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM) devices. It reads and stores data by means of an array of transistors and capacitors. The transistors act as control switches that allow access to the capacitors. The capacitors act as storage elements that can hold the value of either 1 or 0. The 25LC040/SN requires higher voltage levels than conventional logic systems in order to write and read data. The device can be programmed with a 12.75 Volt power supply. It requires a 6.75 – 7.25 Volt power supply to write or read data. In order to erase data, the device requires a 12.75 Volt power supply with a high voltage source (20 – 27 Volt). The 25LC040/SN also features a self-timed write cycle. This feature eliminates the need for the user to time write operations. When the write enable pin is pulled low, the device initiates the write cycle and completes it automatically. Once the data value is written, the device then sets the write enable pin back to high.In addition, the 25LC040/SN is equipped with a self-timed internal write cycle. This feature allows data to be written to the device without manual intervention. The internal write cycle ensures that the proper data is written each time during the write cycle.The 25LC040/SN also has a write-protection feature that allows the user to protect certain areas of the memory from being written. By setting up the write-protection bits, the user can lock certain areas of the device or allow only certain types of data, such as program code or system configuration data, to be written to the device.Overall, the 25LC040/SN is a simple and efficient memory device that is ideal for embedding into various applications and systems. With its self-timed write cycle, write-protection and high-voltage requirements, the 25LC040/SN provides an ideal solution for applications that require quick and reliable access to memory data.
