When an AC voltage is applied to the anode and cathode of the rectifier, the back to back diodes inside the rectifier each begin to alternately forward-conduct and reverse-block this voltage. The voltage on the cathode of the diode that is forward-biased will be passed through to the load device, while the diode that is reverse-biased will block the voltage from the load.
This periodic forward conduction and reverse blocking effectively results in the rectified AC voltage being converted into a pulsating DC voltage. The peak voltages of this pulsating DC will be higher than the AC peak voltage due to the forward voltage drop of the rectifier, and will be determined by the magnitude of the AC voltage and the sum of the forward voltage drops of the diode rectifier. The resulting DC load current is then determined by the frequency and peak voltage of the pulsating DC voltage.
