RF Mixers are devices used to combine two signals, where one signal is generally in the form of a constant frequency carrier and the other signal is usually a varying sinusoidal. The resultant output signal carries the combined frequencies of both the original signals in a harmonic arrangement. HFA3101B is one such RF mixer which converts signals in the frequency range from 300 MHZ to 1000 MHZ to IF frequencies of 70 MHZ to 210 MHZ. Application Field
HFA3101B is used in applications such as amateur radios, VHF/UHF communication, radio surveillance, receivers, multi-channel systems, and reverse communication devices. This mixer is particularly suitable for use at the front end of transceiver-controlled communication systems where selectivity and low noise levels are of critical importance.
Working principle
HFA3101B is an active mixer which typically uses two transistors for implementation. The RF signal is applied to the first transistor\'s base terminal, while the Local Oscillator (LO) signal is applied on the emitter terminal. The converted Interemdiation Frequency (IF) signal is then taken out from the collector terminal of the first transistor. The “X” family transistor XFET is the mixing element used to mix the RF and LO signals and at the same time, produce a frequency converted signal.
The application diagram for the HFA3101B includes a few external components such as a noise filter, and other passive components, and the signal bandwidth is mainly determined by the quality of these components. The maximum output signal is typically achieved when the DC supply voltage ranges from 6V to 15V. It should be noted that the LO and RF signals should not be allowed to exceed the absolute maximum ratings specified in the datasheet as this can cause permanent damage and lead to malfunctioning of the IC.
