ISL61862EIRZ-T PMIC - Hot Swap Controllers

The ISL61862EIRZ-T is one of Intersil’s ranges of Hot Swap Controllers. It is an integrated power-management chip with fault protection, thermal monitoring and an accurate voltage-current control for systems, mainly in the telecom and datacom industry. The Hot Swap concept provides powered insertion of boards into live systems and power supplies without the need of an external ‘on/off’ switch. This greatly reduces system time-to-market, save cost by eliminating the need for external circuitry and less manual intervention. Additionally, being an integral part of the system, it offers protection features such as current limit, over-temperature detection, input FET short-circuit protection, and output short, open and over-voltage protection.The ISL61862EIRZ-T enables the designer to select a desired current limit level which allows the system to handle higher power applications. An internal thermal monitor which is triggered at pre-set temperature, allows designers to choose the desired over-temperature protection level.

Working Principle

The ISL61862EIRZ-T provides an internal voltage reference to allow for an accurate setting of current limit. An internal thermal monitor prevents the output from going beyond a preset temperature. The output voltage is monitored by an integrated voltage sense circuit.The integrated power MOSFET switch is driven by an internal gate driver, providing fast turn-on and turn-off capabilities and minimizing the amplitude of the ringing at the input of the Hot Swap controller. The on-resistance of the integrated MOSFET switch is very low, ensuring a fast response during insertion and removal events.The current flow through the power MOSFET switch is monitored by the ISL61862EIRZ-T. An accurate current comparator is used to compare the sensed current with an internal current limit reference. Once the user’s set current limit is reached, the controller shuts down the MOSFET switch and turns off the power supply on the board.
