Power Management Integrated Circuits (PMICs) have become a critical component of modern electronics. They enable the efficient delivery of power to every component of a system, increasing reliability and extending component life. Gate drivers are designed to provide a high level of control and modulation of power to Switch Mode Power Supply (SMPS) circuits and controllers. LM5112SD/NOPB ‘s Application Field includes the integrated circuits for automotive wiring harness, motor control, airbag or vehicle crash detection, regenerative braking and valve drive applications. Despite the high voltage range input, providing an active ground level for the internal gate driver allows for the use of a low voltage control signal. This provides a stable operation across the input voltage range, as well as improved power dissipation at low voltages.
LM5112SD/NOPB is designed to drive high power N-Channel Power MOSFETs in applications operating from 4.5V to 26V. It integrates the drivers, pre-drivers and supply current limit circuits. It has a DC gain of 36V/V, typical rise and fall times of 15ns and 50ns and a peak gate current drive of 650mA. The Gate Sense pin monitors the rise and fall times of the gate drive at the output. The Gate Sense pin senses the actual gate voltage on the output and will prevent the Gate Drive pin from attempting to source more current than that available from the Gate Sense line.
LM5112SD/NOPB’s Working Principle is quite simple. The gate driver’s output current is sourced from the Gate Drive pin. The Gate Sense pin supplies a voltage that corresponds to the actual gate voltage of the output. The voltage applied to the Gate Sense pin is monitored by the internal logic and compared with the voltage applied to the Gate Drive pin. If the voltage applied to the Gate Drive pin is higher than that applied to the Gate Sense pin, the gate driver will not source more current than the maximum available from the Gate Sense line.
The input signal to the Gate Driver is taken from the Control Pin and can be either a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signal or a manual switch. The internal logic then converts the input voltage to a current that is proportional to the voltage and level of the input. This current is then applied to the Gate Drive pin, allowing the gate driver to provide the necessary drive current to the Power MOSFETs. The result of the Gate Drive is sufficient current flowing through the Power MOSFET gates, allowing them to open and close, thereby controlling the power delivery to the load.
LM5112SD/NOPB also provides protection against overcurrent and short circuit, as well as thermal protection and an overvoltage lockout. The overcurrent and short circuit protection prevents the gate driver from overloading and destroying the output circuit, while the thermal protection ensures that the dissipation levels are kept within the limits of the system. The overvoltage lockout protects the gate driver from being damaged by high voltages.
