Working Principle
The LM5115EVAL evaluation board is based on a synchronous buck-boost converter topology. This converter topology allows the device to convert an input voltage into an output voltage that is either higher or lower than the input voltage. The converter operates by rapidly switching a power MOSFET device between the input and output voltage rails.
When the MOSFET is switched ON, current flows from the input voltage source into the output voltage rail. At this time, the input voltage is higher than the output voltage, and the device is operating in buck-mode. During this time, the MOSFET device is set to the ON, such that the output voltage is pushed down by a factor equal to the duty cycle of the driving signal.
When the MOSFET is switched off, current flows from the output voltage rail into the input voltage source. At this time, the input voltage is lower than the output voltage, and the device is operating in boost-mode. During this time, the MOSFET device is set to the OFF, such that the output voltage is pushed up by a factor equal to the duty cycle of the driving signal.
The LM5115EVAL converter is designed to operate over a wide input voltage range and is optimized to achieve high efficiency and low-ripple under a wide variety of operating conditions. It includes features such as cycle-by-cycle current limiting, over-current protection, and adjustable soft-start.
