LM5101CSDX application field and working principle

The LM5101CSDX is a field-stoppable, full-featured gate driver offered by Texas Instruments. Designed to drive higher voltage/power systems, the LM5101CSDX is a programmable, true isolated gate driver IC ideal for Power MOSFET and IGBT applications. The product is classified as a PMIC - Gate Drivers, defined as a device incorporating an isolated, programmable drive stage that serves to protect and control the high-side and low-side power switches, such as the mosfet and IGBT.

The LM5101CSDX can range from 8 A to 13 A of peak source/sink current, and can offer an isolation rating of 1.7 kV as well as voltage transient immunity of 15 kV/μs. The driver utilizes an original chipset composed of a variety of unique and innovative features, that are user enabled or disabled. The LM5101CSDX includes a standalone stand-alone single-supply voltage of 2.7 V to 5.5 V, best-in-class EMI suppression, crowbar overcurrent protection, a 100 ns rise/fall times and chip disable control.

Working Principle

The working principle of the LM5101CSDX is based on the Highly Integrated Multi-Channel Gate Drive System (HIMGDS). The HIMGDS consists of several identical gate drive channels, which are simply connected to each power switch and the driver\'s bias supply.Each channel within the gate driver is fully-controllable with the single-supply voltage and can be configured to handle both low side and high side power switches. The channels can be configured independently for each power switch, providing for total configuration flexibility. Additionally, the HIMGDS provides enhanced EMC immunity, with faster rise/fall times, lower radiated EMI, and increased protection against power fluctuations.

The HIMGDS can also be used in combination with a dc-dc converter to provide a more efficient and compact power solution. The integrated dc-dc converter not only provides power to the gate driver, but also isolates the high side and low side of the circuit to prevent cross-over problems. This allows for a more efficient and reliable operation of the power switches.The LM5101CSDX also utilizes TI \'s SmartDrive current sensing technology to measure the current flowing through the circuit to prevent over-current and over-voltage events. SmartDrive offers accurate current measurements, as well as temperature protection and auto-shutdown capability, ensuring that power supplies remain within safe operating parameters. Overall, the LM5101CSDX provides a robust, reliable and feature-rich solution for driving high power MOSFETs and IGBTs.
