The LM5122EVM-1PH evaluation board is designed as an evaluation platform for Texas Instruments’ LM5122 dual PWM controller, a high performance, current-mode control integrated circuit (IC) for use in off-line and DC/DC VCC and LLC resonant power supplies. The board is suitable for evaluation of the LM5122 in a broad range of AC/DC, DC/DC and LLC Resonant power supply applications.

The LM5122EVM-1PH board utilizes half-bridge topology with synchronous rectification to achieve high efficiency of over 90% for single phase AC/DC, full bridge DC/DC and LLC resonant converters. The evaluation board is provided with a 24-VAC wall adapter which is connected to a step-down transformer whose output provides up to 40V or higher to power the board. A switching FET for each phase is included, along with a built-in switchmode power supply to generate the gate drive supply voltage for the FETs.

The LM5122EVM-1PH evaluation board concentrates on embedded features available in the LM5122 that allow easy implementation of single phase AC/DC, DC/DC and LLC resonant power conversion. The LM5122 integrated circuit allows for a fast transient response with minimum output voltage overshoot. Key features of the board include a low architecture for reduced start-up and shut-down time; full synchronous rectification control; wide range adjustable soft-start; comprehensive protection circuitry, including short-circuit, over-voltage, over-current, under-voltage, and over-temperature; and a switching frequency of up to 500kHz.

The LM5122EVM-1PH evaluation board includes several external controls and terminals that simplify experimentation and provide access to features and to system parameters which are currently set for a 12V to 25V output application. Connectors and headers are provided to access additional system parameters as well as to monitor, and adjust the evaluation board parameters. All of these features make the board a powerful and efficient tool for use in design and evaluation.

The LM5122EVM-1PH evaluation board also includes TI’s Easy Pro software, which provides the ability to modify onboard parameters directly from a computer. The Easy Pro software also allows users to monitor controller parameters, such as input voltage, and output voltage, and current, as well as to control startup time and output power. The flexibility of the LM5122 evaluation board allows users to quickly evaluate the device and adjust the application to their specific requirements.

The LM5122 controller IC is designed for a broad range of off-line and DC/DC VCC and LLC resonant power supplies. The IC provides monitoring and control of a synchronous rectifier, which minimizes power losses by actively controlling the current simultaneous conduction of the upper and lower power switches. Additionally, the LM5122 IC offers a wide range of features to optimize the power supply design, reduce component count and provide a high measure of system protection.

The LM5122EVM-1PH evaluation board provides easy access to all of these features to make evaluation and design of AC/DC, DC/DC, and LLC resonant power supplies simple and fast. Additionally, the board utilizes protections such as over-voltage, under-voltage, over-temperature, short-circuit, and over-current protection to safely and reliably evaluate the device. The board is an ideal tool for quick evaluation, tweaking, and demonstration of the LM5122 IC.
