Every modern electrical device requires a power management integrated circuit (PMIC) to operate efficiently. The PMIC usually consists of multiple types of converters, including AC/DC converters, offline switchers, voltage regulators and motor controllers. Among them, the LNK305PN is a popular and widely used AC/DC converter that represents the most basic type of power supply. It has a wide application field, including LED lighting, home appliances and computer peripherals. The LNK305PN is a monolithic high-voltage integrated circuit, containing a single-phase, full-wave AC/DC converter, an oscillator and a few other features. It is typically used in conjunction with a flyback transformer. The primary side of the transformer receives AC input voltage and current, while the secondary side of the transformer provides output power to the external load.The LNK305PN is designed to work as a so-called “quasi-resonant flyback converter.” In this operation mode, the AC current input is switched rapidly on and off at a frequency determined by the controlling circuitry embedded in the LNK305PN chip. The magnetic energy stored in the inductor of the transformer is then recycled and released to the secondary side of the transformer to power the external load. This oscillating nature of the primary windings of the transformer results in quasi-resonant effects which enable the converter to operate at a lower switching frequency. This in turn reduces the electrical losses, improves the efficiency of the converter and results in a cooler operation output.The LNK305PN’s controlling circuitry also includes a “burst-mode” operation feature. In this mode, the converter will switch to a reduced frequency during no-load or light-load conditions and further reduce the total power consumption. As this feature is automatically activated whenever necessary, the LNK305PN is a great solution for preserving power in energy-conscious applications.Finally, the LNK305PN also offers some additional features such as an active clamp circuit, an under-voltage lockout circuit and a programmable soft-start function. These provide an optimum protection against various types of faults that could occur on the primary and/or secondary sides of the flyback converter.In conclusion, the LNK305PN is an integrated circuit with a wide application field. It can be used to convert high-voltage AC power into low-voltage DC power with high efficiency, thanks to its quasi-resonant mode of operation and its burst-mode feature. This makes the LNK305PN the ideal solution for any power-conscious application.
