The LNK306PN is a competitively priced, primary-side regulating offline switcher IC. It is specifically designed to reduce power dissipation and cost in off-line isolated Fly back applications while providing reliable and efficient power conversion. This device uses Constant Power/Constant Voltage (CP/CV) switching technology to reduce power dissipation and cost.

The LNK306PN consists of a high voltage power MOSFET and an 800 V SenseFET driving a primary-side regulated Flyback converter. It includes a 700 V power MOSFET and generates up to 1.6 A of continuous current at an output accuracy of ±10 %. It has an adjustable hysteretic switching frequency from 100 kHz to 300 kHz and is designed to suit applications from 12 W to 35 W. The LNK306PN also offers protection features such as Under-Voltage Lockout (UVLO) for enabling and disabling operation, Temperature Protection (TP) for thermal protection and Cycle-by-Cycle Current Limit (CCL) for primary-side current limiting. This device also has adjustable soft-start and an inhibit function for external control.

The working principle of the LNK306PN is simple. When an AC input is applied to the primary-side rectifier bridge, the output of the bridge is rectified and stored in the form of energy in the input capacitor CIN. Meanwhile, the energy is amplified and stored in the output inductor L1. The MOSFET is then driven on-time by the SenseFET to reduce the stored energy in the output inductor and switch off the power MOSFET, providing a regulated output voltage. The transformer primary current and secondary current are sensed by the IC in order to provide primary-side regulation of output voltage and controlling the switching frequency.
