TVS - Diodes, also known as transil diodes, are an important type of semiconductor device. They are mainly used in three areas: overvoltage suppression, surge protection and ESD protection. In this article, we will focus on the application field and working principle of MAP5KE100A.MAP5KE100A is a unidirectional TVS diode array for automotive transient-voltage protection applications. It is comprised of four channels with independent groups of two elements in each channel. The bulk junction breakdown voltage is rated at +/- 100V with a 5.6pF capacitance.The MAP5KE100A is capable of operating in both transient voltage spike (TVS) and low capacitance ESD protection modes. In the TVS mode, the device will absorb transient voltage spikes of up to +150V and -50V. In the ESD mode, it will protect against ESD pulses of up to 2kV as required by IEC61000-4-2.The working principle of the MAP5KE100A is based on the PN junction. When a TVS diode is exposed to a voltage higher than its rated Punch Through Voltage (PTV), it will pass current and act as a low impedance path, thus diverting the excess voltage away from the protected component. At the same time, its internal capacitance will absorb the peak energy of the TVS spike, dampening its effect.In ESD protection mode, the device operates as an open circuit under normal conditions. When an ESD pulse above 2kV is applied, the device will act as a short circuit and divert the energy away from the protected component. The internal capacitance again absorbs some of the pulse energy and dissipates it safely.The MAP5KE100A is ideally suited for automotive applications where voltage surges, induced by lightning or line switching, can occur. It can also be used in domestic and industrial applications where voltage spikes are likely to be encountered, and in medical equipment where an ESD protection device is necessary.In conclusion, MAP5KE100A is a highly versatile TVS diode array designed for automotive transient-voltage protection applications.
