Working Principle

The MAP5KE7.0A is a unidirectional device which allows current to flow in one direction and blocks current when the voltage is in the reverse direction. As voltage increases, the device blocks current until the voltage reaches its breakdown voltage. The breakdown voltage is a decisive factor for determining which kind of overvoltage protection the device can offer. This is usually set at a value to ensure that ESD transients, electrical noise or other undesirable signal interference are suppressed.

Once the breakdown voltage is exceeded, the device begins to conduct and the current is limited to the maximum rated value. The current begins to decrease as the voltage increases beyond the breakdown voltage until the current reaches zero. This is known as the clamping voltage. The MAP5KE7.0A can provide up to 7.0A of peak pulse power dissipation with a 10/1000 µs pulse waveform.

In the case of an ESD transient, the TVS diode absorbs the energy from the transient and then returns the voltage to its normal state. The MAP5KE7.0A is designed to protect both data and power lines and offers a clamping voltage of 22V and a working voltage of 24V. The protection level is also high, up to 25A (8/20µs surge waveform).
