MAP5KE16CA, is a unidirectional Transient Voltage Suppression Diode (TVS-Diodes) that specifically protects sensitive electronic circuits from destructive electrostatic discharges (ESD) and from transient overvoltages due to lighting. It is also widely used as a secondary protection devices in combination with power MOSFETs, for example, on DC-DC converters or polyfuses.
MAP5KE16CA is packaged in SOD-123FL and SOD-523 packages, with an avalanche current capability of 16A. It is designed for ESD, CDM, and Field Induced Charge (FIC) protection, and has a low capacitance of 2.5pF maximum. It is also configured to meet the most severe ESD and CDM specification according to the JESD22-A114E Standard.
The working principle of the MAP5KE16CA is to be a suppression diode with a very low breakdown voltage of 5.6V. When the incoming voltage exceeds this level, MAP5KE16CA will activate and clamp the voltage. This helps reduce overvoltage, ESD and CDM caused by the current associated with these events to a level safe for downstream devices. The breakdown voltage of MAP5KE16CA can also be adjusted via its temperature coefficient, making it suitable for applications outside of the ESD/CDM protection.
When used for ESD or CDM protection, the MAP5KE16CA works electrically as a parasitic diode between power and all sensitive pins in the circuit. When the incoming voltage exceeds 5.6V, MAP5KE16CA will turn ON instantly and then clamp the voltage at around 5.6V. Its avalanche current capability of 16A makes it suitable for tough environment.
MAP5KE16CA is suitable for many application fields such as Automotive, Audio/Video, Computers, DataCommunication and Network devices, Consumer Electronics, and Industrial Applications. Some common applications are ESD protection for communications ports in cars, shielding against EMI, ESD and CDM protection for laptops, as well as overvoltage and ESD protection for mobile phone boards.
