Working Principle

When the voltage on the MAP5KE36A exceeds its breakdown voltage, the diode conducts current. The device includes two zener diodes, one in series with the anode, and another in parallel with the cathode. The parallel diode holds the voltage on the cathode to approximately 10V, while the series diode ensures the anode remains close to ground. When a high voltage is applied to the anode, the diode\'s capacitance will allow a certain amount of current to flow as the voltage is reaching its breakdown point.

When the voltage at the diode reaches its clamping voltage, the current will increase sharply, causing the diode to act as a short circuit and dissipate the energy while preventing further voltage spikes. This process will repeat as long as the voltage at the anode remains above the breakdown voltage. The MAP5KE36A can also act as a surge absorber, reducing the peak voltage and clamping it to a safe level.
