TVS - Diodes are transient voltage suppressors - devices designed for protecting circuits from voltage transients generated by lightning, inductive kickback, and other sources on AC and DC power lines. As an important part of circuit protection, MAP5KE36CAE3 is a unidirectional bidirectional transient voltage suppressor which is widely used in consumer electronics, communication, automotive, healthcare and other applications.
As an electronic component, MAP5KE36CAE3 has two terminals – the anode and the cathode. This diode has a unique structure, in which its cathode is made up of a set of PN junction strings connected in series. The anode of the diode is a metal (Al) pad. The PN junction strings are composed of doped N-type and P-type layers and are much narrower than conventional diodes. This leads to a very high breakdown voltage along with a low surge capability.
The working principle of MAP5KE36CAE3 is based on the voltage-clamping characteristics of PN junction strings. When an over-voltage transient occurs, the voltage increases to a value above the device’s Standoff Voltage. This results in an avalanche multiplication effect which causes a conduction path to be formed between the device’s anode and cathode. The excess current passes through this conduction path, thus reducing the excessive voltage.
MAP5KE36CAE3 is designed mainly for use in AC power lines, Uninterruptible Power Supplies, and other AC line voltage applications. These devices can be used to protect electronic circuits from damaging transients generated by lightning or other sources.
