PMIC - Battery Chargers: MCP73113-16SI/MF Application Field and Working Principle
MCP73113-16SI/MF, from a power management integrated circuit (PMIC) point of view, is a battery charger designed for handheld, portable and other mobile devices. It integrates eight current setting resistors and two low side PFETs in addition to related features such as gain control, fault delay and input current limit. As a part of the PMIC-Battery Chargers family, the MCP73113-16SI/MF is widely used in the portable device market for the charging of Li-ION and Li-Poly batteries. It is suitable for applications subject to space constraints, such as in cell phones, PDAs. watches, and other wearable devices.
The MCP73113-16SI/MF is an optimal solution combining minimal external components, and simplified external component selections, to allow the charging of Li-ION batteries in a small SOT23 package. In comparison to discrete solutions, it offers the robustness and cost effectiveness of an integrated solution in a very small package size. The device operates in three distinct modes: pre-charge, fast charge and top-off. The component’s internal voltage regulation also provides protection against short-circuit and over-charge conditions.
Functional Block Diagram

The device contains two low side power transistor MOSFET’s, eight current-setting resistors, and associated error amplifier/gain block and various components required to form a charge algorithm. The MCP73113-16SI/MF can be programmed with an external resistor to provide the desired charging current. The adjustable resistor can also be used to set the pre-charge voltage level. The device also has two programmable current settings for fast-charge and top-off modes, allowing the user to program the device for the desired applications.
Working Principle
When the power switch is turned on, the input voltage is applied to the internal MOSFETs and the error amplifier/gain block. The internal current sense monitor senses the voltage drop across the sense resistor and provides a feedback to the gain block. Based on the programmed current level, the error amplifier/gain block adjusts the voltage applied to the MOSFETS, thus regulating the current to the desired level. The internal MOSFETS also ensure that the current is driven in the proper direction (from the source to the drain terminals).
When the input voltage exceeds the programmed voltage, the MCP73113-16SI/MF will cease the current and enter the top-off mode. In the top-off mode, the device will maintain the current to a minimum level until the input voltage falls below the programmed voltage. At this point, the device will start charging again and continue until the battery is fully charged.
The MCP73113-16SI/MF also includes an internal fault delay function to ensure that the device will only enter the pre-charge mode after the input voltage drops below the programmed pre-charge voltage. This ensures that the device will not enter the pre-charge mode until the battery has been sufficiently charged.
