The MCP73827-4.1VUA is a precise, low-cost current-limited battery charger and system power-path management device designed to safely charge 1- to 4-cell Li-Ion/Li-Polymer cells. This application field and working principle of MCP73827-4.1VUA are classified as PMIC - Battery Chargers.

MCP73827-4.1VUA operates with an input supply range of 2.6V to 6.5V where it efficiently charges a 1-4 series Li-Ion/Li-Polymer battery to a maximum voltage of 4.1V over temperature range -40°C to 85°C. The device delivers a precise programmable current up to 1.25A while the system logic monitors and controls the entire charge process. It is designed to automatically select and switch between the battery and USB power sources, depending on the input source availability. MCP73827-4.1VUA has automatic recharge and provides end-of-charge control function. The device also reports status flag and temperature flag interrupt signals to processor or microcontroller.

MCP73827-4.1VUA works in three phases namely pre-charge, fast charge and charge termination. It is designed with an intelligent input state machine to drive the FETs which do the switching between battery and the input sources. The device includes a comparator for setting the maximum battery voltage. The IC also includes a power control connection for controlling the MCP73827-4.1VUA. The device also includes a thermal protection circuit which shuts off the charger output when the junction temperature is reached.

MCP73827-4.1VUA provides a full-featured protection and reliability of battery charging. An internal MOSFET FET switch provides current limit by regulating the maximum allowed current that is determined by external resistor. It also offers thermal protection through an internally generated current limit signal once the junction temperature reaches the pre-programmed over temperature value. The device also implements the three cell battery protection function which helps in preventing possible damage to the battery if tri-state cells are used.

MCP73827-4.1VUA also acts as a power-path management device that selects the USB port or the battery, if both the sources are available. When the USB power is available, it will select USB as the input source and charge the battery from the USB port. When the USB port is removed and the battery voltage is above 3.5V, the device will select the battery as the input source and will operate in system mode to further provide backup power to the system. This also helps in maximizing system runtime while minimizing the battery charge time. As an added feature, the device offers a battery reverse-charge protection circuit that prevents the damage to the battery pack because of a reverse charging scenario.
