PMIC - Battery Chargers, a rapidly advancing field, have seen tremendous changes in the past few years. One new solution that stands out is the MCP73831-2ACI/MC charger integrated circuit. This new device provides a high performance, low cost battery charging solution for both advanced and basic charging needs.

MCP73831-2ACI/MC is a battery charge management integrated circuit with an internal 2.8V low voltage power supply and an internal 4.2V float voltage regulator. It supports two types of charging current, Constant-Voltage/ Constant-Current (CV/CC) and Constant-Voltage/Constant-Power (CV/CP) charging modes. It is ideal for battery-powered applications such as handheld devices and mobile phones.

In the CV/CC mode, MCP73831-2ACI/MC adjusts the current to maintain a constant voltage at the battery terminals, thus preventing overcharging of the battery. The device offers a wide range of operating input voltages from 3.2V to 25V depending on the battery chemistry. In the CV/CP mode, the device drives the current at a level such that the battery voltage does not exceed the preset level.

In either of the two modes, the MCP73831-2ACI/MC can safely manage the charging process without the need for any external components. Additionally, the device includes an integrated timer and temperature monitor, providing protection against overcharging, undercharging, and over-temperature conditions.

The MCP73831-2ACI/MC can be controlled with any microcontroller that has an I2C or SMBus interface. The charging parameters such as termination current, termination voltage, safety timer, and temperature limit can be programmed through the I2Cbus. Other features include overvoltage protection, thermal monitor, input undervoltage lockout, safety timers, and reverse-current protection.
