Introduction
MCP73831-5ACI/MC is a highly integrated 5 A linear charge manager designed to charge 1 or 2 series Li-ion/Li-Polymer/LiFePO4/NiMH/NiCD cells for a wide range of applications. This device includes a number of safety features such as short circuit, thermal shut-down and reverse battery protection. It can be configured to operate in either low-power trickle charge or high-power fast charge mode. The device also incorporates an 10-bit ADC which can provide temperature, cell or system voltage monitoring capability when connected with an external sensing resistor.

Working Principle
The MCP73831-5ACI/MC has an on-board high speed, low output noise regulator for charging the battery. It is a linear regulator primarily consisting of a power transistor, current sense resistor and a low impedance bypass capacitor. The regulator is capable of accepting input voltages up to 16 V and providing an adjustable output voltage of 3.2 V to 4.4 V. The output current is adjustable from 100 mA to 5 A. The MCP73831-5ACI/MC also includes digital features such as thermal protection, battery voltage monitoring and over discharge protection.

The battery is charged using a so-called 4-step process: current regulation mode, constant-voltage regulation mode, maintenance charge and float charge. In the current regulation mode, the MCP73831-5ACI/MC regulates the current to the limit set by the charge control input pin of the device and maintains the battery voltage at the same level. Once the set current is reached, the device shifts to constant-voltage regulation mode where the voltage across the battery is maintained at the set voltage by limiting the current flow. Maintenance charge and float charge mode is used for topping up and maintenance of the battery charge state.

The charging process can be initiated with an external signal or the on-board logic and the charge status can be monitored by an external chip. The device supports various charging profiles such as fast-charge, trickle-charge and discharge, thermal management and sleep mode. The MCP73831-5ACI/MC also provides over voltage, over current, under voltage and thermal protection features to protect the battery from overcharging and over-discharging. The device also has an auxiliary pin for discharging the battery in case of an emergency.
