Working Principle

The MCP73834T-CNI/MF is a multi-function charger IC that uses a constant-current/constant-voltage (CC/CV) charge profile to charge Li-ion and Li-polymer batteries.

When the battery is inserted into the charger, the charge cycle begins, the voltage across the battery is measured and the current is adjusted accordingly. Initially, the controller supplies a constant current to the battery. Once the voltage of the battery reaches the set voltage of the controller, the controller will then switch over to a voltage-limited charging, providing a constant voltage of 4.2V to the battery as it is charged.

Once the current reaches the pre-programmed value, the controller drops out of the charging mode and enters the full battery condition, at which point the battery is fully charged.

The MCP73834T-CNI/MF also has a temperature monitoring feature, which is designed to shut off the power supply in the event of an excessive temperature.
