A battery charger represents a power management integrated circuit (PMIC) specially designed to tend battery cells. Battery chargers have the capacity to charge rechargeable batteries with a current compatible with their type and size. This is the case of the MCP73871T-2CCI/ML, a PMIC focused in battery management.

The 3.0-pin SC70 packages provide flexible power path management for single cell Li-Ion/Li-Polymer batteries. This device employs an automatic recharge system along with a programmable linear charger. It features end-of-charge status output, recharge status, and automatic power-switch control.

The precision current-sensing and voltage-regulation circuits are implemented, respectively, with a 0.1% and 0.5% accuracy of the level set by the active programming pins. A programmable current protection and input protection circuit ensures safety to the device.

Several automotive and industrial applications, such as power tools, health care, and portable instruments, require focus on battery management, as such exemplary devices have a long operational life, enabling recharge/discharge cycles with time intervals.
