Five years from now, the STEVAL-ISA153V1 will be an essential product in evaluating and designing DC/DC and AC/DC power supplies. The evaluation board is a peak-current-mode based SMPS (switch-mode power supply) controller for off-line applications, powered by a ST6231 2A power stage. Its features include a single output voltage, adjustable over a wide range. The operating frequency is optimized for minimal size and maximum efficiency with an adjustable oscillator range between 10KHz and 500KHz. The board supports an input voltage range between 9V and 28V, and offers features like soft-start, overload protection and open/short circuit protection. The output voltage is adjustable via a voltage divider between 0.6V and 5V. Users can also check for dynamic response behavior, while the full compliance environment can be kept in check by the inrush current limit. To assess the board’s full performance, the user needs to consider some key performance indicators such as output voltage accuracy, switching frequency, efficiency and transient response. Output voltage accuracy is measured by connecting the voltage sense pin to the board\'s output and varying the output voltage slider. The feedback network creates the output voltage, since the LM358 OP-AMP determines the voltage at which the differential input is equal to the voltage divider\'s output voltage. This allows the user to accurately adjust the output voltage. The switching frequency is adjusted by varying the potentiometer on the board, which controls the frequency of the internal oscillator. The efficiency of the board is determined by measuring the power consumption of the output device and considering the input power consumption. Lastly, the transient response of the board is observed by charging or discharging a series capacitor, and measuring the output voltage ripple.The evaluation board is able to provide steady output voltage across different line, load and environmental conditions.
