The STEVAL-USBC2DP evaluation and demonstration board is a complete solution ideal for enabling and supporting the designs of USB Type-C to DisplayPort displays. By using the ST Microelectronics’ STM32F072CBT6 microcontroller with its internal 32-bit Arm Cortex-M0 high performance processor and the NXP PTN5110, this board can be used to transmit digital video and audio signals from USB Type-C port to a DisplayPort output with resolution up to 4k@60Hz.

The board provides a complete USB Type-C and DisplayPort sink interface that allows developers a way to expand their testing and development process. The STEVAL-USBC2DP is packaged with the STM32F072CBT6 MCU, a NXP PTN5110 DisplayPort-to-USB Type-C Switch, and an STM32 Nucleo-32 Evaluation and Programming Board. The latter allows developers to control and manage the entire system as a single design.

At the heart of the design is the STM32F072CBT6 microcontroller. This high performance system-on-chip (SoC) features a 32-bit Arm Cortex-M0 core, with up to 512KB of Flash memory and 48KB SRAM. The STM32F072CBT6 MCU also includes various peripherals, such as up to 16 timers, up to 2 USB OTG, two proven 16-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and a CAN controller. The ARM Cortex-M0 core operates at a maximum of 80MHz, and can be used to retrieve data available through USB Type-C connectors and transmit it to the NXP PTN5110 switch and to the DisplayPort output.

The NXP PTN5110 integrated into the design is a low power, display-port switch IC from NXP. This device helps to enable the connection between the source and display end-points, working in tandem with the DisplayPort v1.3 link layer. Aside from supporting a variety of features the device also provides a low power solution for the USB Type-C connection as well as a low power indicator LED. Furthermore, the NXP PTN5110 ensures compliance with the USB Type-C and DisplayPort specifications.

Using the STM32 Nucleo-32 board together with the STEVAL-USBC2DP solution engages various features of the ARM Cortex-M0 microcontroller. The STM32 Nucleo-32 board comes with various useful features of its own, including a 21-strong general-purpose input/output (GPIO) header, four LEDs, three 18-bit capacitive touch channel with Joystick, as well as two separate buttons. The ARM Cortex-M0 core operates in low power mode while managing the entire system with a single power supply.
