The TL594CDTB is a direct off-line switching regulator that offers the convenience of push-button adjustment for the output voltage. The TL594CDTB is a practical voltage regulator for 24V to 36V input bus voltage applications in switched-mode power supplies as well as stand-alone application circuits.
The TL594CDTB is an improved version of the popular TL594CDT technology, providing an improved feature set, increased power density, and reduced losses across a wide range of operating conditions. It offers an adjustable output from 2.6V to 16V and 3A of continuous load current. It has a power-saving current-mode design, providing excellent efficiency and fast transient response. It offers multiple user-configurable protection and fault status reporting functions to ensure system reliability.
The TL594CDTB is also designed with a constant-voltage/constant-current (CV/CC) control architecture, eliminating the need for external resistors and capacitors. This allows the circuit to be operated in constant voltage, constant current, or voltage/current limit modes depending on the application. The TL594CDTB also offers on-board temperature monitoring and soft-start that minimize system stress in startup. It features adjustable switching frequency that eliminates the need for external frequency synchronization.
The TL594CDTB is a fundamental building block of many switching power supply designs, providing the stable and reliable voltage source for the primary switching regulator or buck controller and providing a host of protection and fault-reporting features for the system.
Working Principle
When powered and configured correctly, the TL594CDTB adjusts the output of the buck converter to maintain the regulated output voltage. The current-mode architecture of the TL594CDTB allows it to respond quickly to load current changes and provides the stability needed to maintain a regulated output voltage. When the voltage drops below the programmed level, the TL594CDTB increases the switch duty cycle to allow the inductor current to increase and compensate for the drop in output voltage. The TL594CDTB controls the flow of inductor current by monitoring the voltage across the current-sense resistor.
The TL594CDTB provides protection and fault-reporting functions which are user-configurable via the control pins. These however, are not mandatory and can be disabled. For example: undervoltage lockout (UVLO) is a feature that prevents the converter from operating when a loss of primary bus voltage occurs. The TL594CDTB also includes overvoltage protection (OVP) that limits the output voltage from exceeding the programmed value. Similarly, the overcurrent protection (OCP) monitors the inductor current to protect against excessive load current. Additionally, the TL594CDTB has an internal thermal shutdown that prevents the output from being damaged in the event excessive temperature is reached.
The TL594CDTB also has a power good signal which indicates the output voltage is within the tolerance band of the programmed value. In addition, it can be used to enable additional components, such as the output enable signal of the buck converter.
In summary, the TL594CDTB is a high-performance DC-DC switching controller that can be used in switched-mode power supplies as well as standalone applications. Its current-mode architecture and numerous protection and fault reporting features make it a reliable and efficient voltage regulator.
