The TNY284PG is a fixed frequency, current mode, low-side, primary-side controller that incorporates VTM power IC control architecture. It is suitable mainly for off-line switching power supplies (SMPS) in fly back topology. It is a type of AC/DC converter, enabling power transfer from AC mains voltage sources to DC loads.
The TNY284PG works as an offline switcher offering various protection features such as an adjustable cycle-by-cycle current limit, over-temperature protection, and an over-voltage protection circuit. The primary-side control approach developed by the VTM technology facilitates the use of a transformer for galvanic isolation between AC mains voltage sources and DC loads, without the requirement of an opto-coupler for signal transfer.
The operation of the TNY284PG is primarily based on a current-mode control approach, with the chip operating at a fixed frequency, while the peak current sensing is used to regulate the power transfer. The timer-controlled fixed frequency current mode controller gets information from the signal received by the peak current sense winding and an internal voltage reference. It further improves stability and system efficiency to reduce the total power dissipation over a wide operating range. The output voltage is adjusted by a ‘P’ and ‘I’ compensation loop.
To improve system stability, the TNY284PG includes a leading edge blanking circuit to reduce the effects of the others on the operation of the power supply. Moreover, the chip has a built-in foldback current sensing feature to lower the peak power and prevent system heat sinks from over-powering during continuous output short-circuit faults. This further ensures the safety of the system.
The TNY284PG further offers various protection circuits for improved reliability, such as an adjustable cycle-by-cycle over current protection that operates with an internal comparator, an overtemperature control circuit, an overvoltage protection circuit, and the ability to monitor the main power transformer’s rectifying diode bridge. The chip also features a power-saving standby mode.
Due to its wide range of features and benefits, the TNY284PG is suitable for a vast array of SMPS topologies, such as fly back and forward converters, used in residential and commercial appliance applications. This chip provides excellent current sensing accuracy from its on-chip peak current comparator, resulting in stability and system efficiency gains.
