Working Principle
The TPS51620RHAR is a synchronous buck regulator that uses voltage-mode control to provide fast transient response. It provides adjustable soft start and adjustable overload current protection for improved system reliability.
The device utilizes an error amplifier to compare the reference voltage with the output voltage to generate the drive signal to the output switch. When the regulated output voltage is lower than the reference voltage, the error amplifier increases the output drive signal to turn on the output switch and to charge the output capacitor. When the regulated output voltage is higher than the reference voltage, the error amplifier reduces the output drive signal to turn off the output switch and to discharge the output capacitor.
In addition, the TPS51620RHAR features an internal thermal shutdown protection that prevents damage in the case of an overload situation or when the IC temperature reaches an unsafe level. It is provided with a power-good signal that can be used to monitor the voltage on the output. This signal is reset to off when the output voltage drops below 90% of its regulated value. Other protection features include under-voltage lockout and overcurrent protection. All of these features ensure the system is protected from various voltage or current faults.
