PMIC - AC DC Converters, Offline Switchers has gained immense popularity recently, due to its efficiency and convenience. Amongst many popular variants, one of the most sought after, is the VIPER16HN.
The VIPER16HN is a single-channel high-voltage isolated flyback application that is used in isolated power supplies. It combines a number of functional blocks, including a DC/DC controller, regulation circuit, and active power line filters, power switch, input filter, and so on. This results in a high-performance, flexible and integrated solution for uninterruptible power supply, industrial power management, AC/DC adapter and battery charger applications.
This high-voltage flyback application is a DC/DC converter that provides efficient, reliable power conversion and comes with high-frequency PWM control. It also has a comprehensive protection mechanism, which includes supply under-voltage protection and over-current protection.
The VIPER16HN features a current-mode control and can handle up to forty amps at an efficiency up to ninety-nine percent. It has active power factor correction, as well as an adjustable hysteresis comparator to ensure less than five percent output current ripple in order to meet stringent EMC requirements. Furthermore, it is equipped with an extra wide input voltage range from eighty-five to five hundred and fifty volts, which is suitable for AC/DC adapter and battery charging applications.
Working Principle
The VIPER16HN gets its power from an external power source, usually the AC mains power. This is rectified and then converted by the DC/DC converter, and the output voltage is regulated with the assistance of a hysteretic comparator. The power switch is then used to control the power flow and determine the output voltage. The integrated protection mechanisms are designed to monitor the input, output and internal system temperatures and provide protection by distinguishing between excessive and normal temperature.
The VIPER16HN also features a PWM controller that is used to regulate the average current. The output voltage is then regulated by comparing the feedback voltage (VFB) with the reference voltage (VREF). When the VFB is higher than VREF, the duty cycle of the PWM is decreased, resulting in a decrease in the output current. The PWM is also used to provide active power factor correction and reduce the output current ripple.
The VIPER16HN power switch also has an onboard protection circuit which is used to monitor the output voltage, input voltage, output current and thermal parameters, thereby providing a high level of protection in order to make sure that the system is running at optimum efficiency. Furthermore, the onboard current sensing circuit provides overload and short circuit protection. The power switch is also equipped with a low standby power feature, allowing the device to remain in a non-operational state while the input voltage is below the start-up threshold.
