The VIPER50A-22-E is a high-performance, low-cost power supply solution designed to meet the highest performance requirements in a variety of application fields. This product series is a member of STMicroelectronics’ five-star rated family of products, and offers a range of features designed to enhance reliability and optimize performance.
The VIPER50A-22-E is intended for non-isolated DC/DC applications such as automotive, industrial, medical and consumer markets. In these applications, it provides high power density, high-efficiency, low EMI and a very low quiescent current.
The VIPER50A-22-E is a low-cost low-voltage step-down DC/DC converter for offline switch-mode power supplies (SMPS). It operates from 20V to 60V input with a peak operating frequency of up to 400kHz and a maximum output power at 25V/5A. The operating frequency and power can be configured by external components according to the customer’s needs. The wide operating frequency range allows the use of small-sized inductors, resulting in reduced component count and a smaller overall solution.
The VIPER50A-22-E provides phase-shedding, or the ability to shut off one phase in light loads, improving efficiency over light load operation. The product also includes integrated over-temperature protection, soft start, and over-voltage protection.
The VIPER50A-22-E utilizes a high-efficiency, full-bridge MOSFET driver, allowing the user to increase performance while minimizing external component count. It also features Advanced Gate Driver (AG) technology which provides a single-transistor control of the gate drive stage. This feature allows the user to reduce the delay between phase switching, leading to an increased efficiency.
In terms of its working principle, the VIPER50A-22-E uses a synchronous buck converter topology. The power supply module consists of an input filter capacitor, an inductor, a pair of metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs), a Schottky diode, an output filter capacitor and other passive components. The basic operating principle of the synchronous buck converter is that energy is transferred from the source to the load by the cyclical application of voltage and current to the MOSFETs. The duty cycle of the switching pattern determines the output voltage, and the frequency determines the rate of energy transfer. The current carrying capacity of the power components is selected by the user so that the switching losses are compensated by the improved efficiency of the IC.
