2N7228 is an enhancement-mode N-channel power MOSFET which is often used in high-power switching applications such as theater lighting and HVAC systems. It provides excellent performance in both low and high frequency switching applications due to its high current capacity, low drain-source resistance (Rds), and high transconductance (gm). The 2N7228 can be used as an analog switch, much like a BJT, to control various signals throughout a circuit.
The application of 2N7228 mainly includes motor control, inverter, AC or DC switching, LED lighting, audio amplifier, HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) control and other industrial machinery control. In motor control applications, 2N7228 acts as a switch between the power source and the motor. It can convert the motor’s energy from AC to DC and provide a safe, reliable, and efficient means of controlling the motor’s speed and torque. In inverter applications, 2N7228 can act as a high current switch in order to convert the input power from DC to AC. It can also be used as a switch in LED lighting applications to extend the lighting’s control range.
2N7228’s working principle depends on the metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET). The MOSFET is a type of transistor where the gate terminal is insulated from the other two terminals (drain and source). When a voltage is applied to the gate terminal, it creates an electric field between the gate and the channel. This electric field can either increase or decrease the conductivity of the channel depending on the voltage applied. When the voltage is above the threshold voltage, the channel will be “on” and will conduct current from the drain to the source. When the voltage is below the threshold voltage, the channel will be “off” and will not conduct current. Thus, by changing the gate voltage, the current flow through the MOSFET can be controlled.
2N7228\'s gate threshold voltage is quite low, which means it can provide good accuracy and control even when the input voltage is very low. It also has low on-resistance, so it can allow large currents to flow with minimal losses.
