ADIS16475-1/PCBZ is a multi-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) with a three-axis accelerometer and three-axis gyroscope, providing wide dynamic range and wide bandwidth. This IMU integrates a number of signal conditioning, filtering, calibration and communication functions in a compact housing influenced by medium g environment, enabling the device to be used in a wide variety of applications. This application note explains the working principle of the ADIS16475-1/PCBZ evaluation board and its applications.The ADIS16475-1/PCBZ evaluation board offers a reliable inertial measurement environment in a highly integrated package. The board incorporates the IMU and signal conditioning circuitry into a single platform, providing 24-bit data at rates up to 12 kHz, and outputting the measurement results via a 3-wire interface.The operating principle of the ADIS16475-1/PCBZ evaluation board is fairly straightforward. It comprises a combination of a gyroscope, an accelerometer and an onboard signal processor. In addition, the evaluation board also includes a USB interface to allow the user to control the IMU and view the measurement results in real time.The gyroscope of the board detects angular rates of motion in all three axes. This is accomplished by measuring the Coriolis force created when the force applied to the gyroscope is changed. This force is detected by transducer elements located in strategic locations, and the resulting voltage is proportional to the angular rate of the body in each axis. The accelerometer measures linear acceleration in the three axes. This is accomplished by measuring the inertial forces created when the acceleration of the body changes. A strain sensing element is located in strategic positions, and the resulting voltage is proportional to the acceleration in each axis.The signals from the gyroscope and accelerometer are then read by an analog-to-digital converter. The signals are then forwarded to the signal processor where they are processed and transformed into digital signals. This processor performs a number of signal preprocessing and filtering operations to minimize errors and provide accurate readings.The data from the evaluation board are then outputted via a 3-wire serial interface. This interface allows for easy integration of the board into any system. Additionally, a USB interface on the board can be used to monitor and control the board from a PC running the ADIS16475 Evaluation Software. The ADIS16475-1/PCBZ evaluation board can be used in a variety of applications. It is suitable for high-precision measurements in the fields of navigation, motion tracking, heading, and aircraft and robotic control. Additionally, the board can be used in the testing and calibration of motion sensing systems, as well as in the development of new sensor algorithms and signal processing techniques.
