An AOI409 is a monolithic single DC-to-DC synchronous switching step-up voltage converter. It offers the features of high input voltage tolerance, low quiescent current and high efficiency in one simple integrated circuit. This makes it an ideal choice for applications where space and power efficiency are essential, such as telecom systems, hand-held electronics and automotive products.

The AOI409 integrates a power MOSFET and a current-mode PWM controller in one. All power terminals including input, output and ground are integrated into the same package, minimizing external components and reducing cost. The device has adjustable soft start, current limit and enable functions, which simplify the design and enable flexible designs.

The AOI409 operates in either DCM (Discontinuous Conduction Mode) or CCM (Continuous Conduction Mode). The primary benefit of DCM mode is the improved efficiency which can be as high as 94%. CCM mode is useful for short-term load transients where it has very quick transient response with minimal output capacitance. It is ideal for applications where the input voltage is noisy or if the current limit needs to be set lower than typical PWM cycles. In either mode, the AOI409 operates at a 1.2 MHz switching frequency.

The working principle is based on the standard flyback topology. It consists of a power MOSFET and a controller IC wired together. When the device is enabled the MOSFET is switched on and off at 1.2MHz rate. During on periods our input voltage is transformed up to the output voltage by the transformer. During the off periods, the energy stored in the transformer is transferred to the output capacitor. As the output voltage rises, a current limit circuit will turn the MOSFET off once the limit is set. This provides over current and thermal protection.

AOI409 has applications in many different type of systems like the telecom, automotive, hand-held electronics and audio systems. As the device provides high input voltage tolerance, low quiescent current and high efficiency it can be used in many power supply designs where space and power efficiency are essential. It also provides features like adjustable soft start and current limit which reduces the complexity of the system.
